CHAPTER ELEVEN

Hearing Sam say he’d never get married hurt. He was a man who had a lot to offer a woman. Christy was also aware that his family would not see her as an acceptable wife for Sam because she wasn’t Amish, though they’d be kind and would accept Ellie as their niece and granddaughter.

She’d known this would be the case. It shouldn’t have impacted her the way it did.

The soul-deep ache throbbed, but she kept her countenance neutral. Her pain would only make Sam worry. He was a strong man with an exceptionally soft heart and a core of responsibility. She couldn’t allow herself to lean on him. It would cost him more than their connection already had.

Gently, she disentangled their hands under the table, feeling bereft but knowing it was for the best. Sam dropped his chin and raised an eyebrow at her. She ignored the silent question.

Katie sat across from her, a notebook and pen in her hands. “Okay, Christy. I want to go over everything that’s happened to you. Everything you can recall. I have a feeling we’re going to need help on this.”

Christy stiffened. “The police—” The words stuck in her throat. Had she come this far only to be ensnared again?

“Relax, Christy. We have connections with the police.”

She blinked. “Excuse me?”

An Amish family with ties to law enforcement?

Sam chuckled next to her. “I see that face you’re making, Christy. We don’t go to the police often, but it happens sometimes. I think you may even like Sergeant Nicole Dawson.”

Levi leaned back. “Jah. I remember working with Sergeant Dawson. She was still just Officer Dawson back then. It was before Lilah and I were married. She’s efficient. I’d trust her to listen and not make any rash judgments.”

That was easy for them to say. She remembered the police cars surrounding her vehicle in Shipshewana. Her father and stepmother had connections, too. Ones that could make her and her daughter disappear.

And Sam. He’d been helping her for only a few days, but she knew that they had to be aware of his presence, even if they didn’t know his identity.

Was it only a matter of time before her father and his cronies discovered who Sam was?

It was time for a leap of faith.

She pulled in a deep breath, repeating to herself that everything would be okay. “Fine. I’ll talk with her. But only her.”

Abram and Katie went to use the phone kept in the painting business office to call the police department. They returned fifteen minutes later.

Katie stepped up beside Christy. “Sergeant Dawson isn’t in today, but she’ll be available first thing tomorrow. We’ll go then.”

She appreciated the support.

“You can leave Ellie with us,” Fannie declared. “Lilah can bring Harrison and Barbara over and we’ll watch the kinder and bake cookies.”

“In the meantime,” Abram said, sauntering over to lean against the counter, “Christy, I think it would be best if you and Ellie came to my haus this evening.”

What? She hadn’t been expecting that. Her heart sank.
